HR Expert Tips: 

Question:  My employee wants to turn in their notice.  Can I let them go today? 

Answer:  First, ask your employee to put their notice in writing and they should sign and date the letter.  If you receive a resignation by email, be sure it is date and time stamped.   Next, yes you can.  However, consider paying them through their two week notice period.  While some states are Employment At Will, accepting a notice early and paying through the notice may create goodwill, keep a customer and protect you from a legal matter.  As well, maintaining a signed resignation letter may protect you from an unemployment claim.

Question:  I'm a small business ower.  Do I really need to have a Employee Handbook? 

Absolutely.  Whether you hire an HR Consultant to create it or you create your own, it is important to document your workplace policies and expectations & inform your employees about their legal rights.  Another important part folks sometimes miss is that they should A) Obtain an employee signature, date and witness B) File the signature form in their employee file.  This form will come in handy should you need to discipline, terminate or process a legal matter.
